"tanks" trip to the East from WA

Post by Keith Morris »

"tanks" here-
Well folks, it has started. I left WA on Saturday and I am going to Newcastle NSW for a drive.
I am at present at a caravan park [$28 / night with power]
at PORT AUGUSTA S.A. waiting for tyres for the Sprinter.
Yes, would you believe it, I had a flat/blowout just out from Kimba SA.
I managed to change the wheel and get the spare tyre onto the Sprinter after much trouble --read here exertion of chest muscles, and off I go on my happy way.
BULLSHIT ! I only went about 30 km and bang---the (spare) tyre fractured.
What to do ?. Call Racwa who contacted the SAA .
With 2 buggered tyres it is a Tilt Tray operation to get me to Port Augusta only about 60 km.
The Tilt Tray was from Neills Automotive who are the Roadside Assist coy sent by RAC [SAA I think over this side ]
RAC mob phoned around for tyres---None of my size in stock, so I have to wait 'till Wednesday when Beaurepairs place their orders, and a delivery date possible Friday. Much the same from Bridgestone.
"Russell" likes the caravan park and the other dogs here---I have told him not to get used to this caravan park life.
Keith.
I'm now 87 years old, having experienced another birthday, and I'm still living in WA, single (gave up looking), white hair, no teeth, no money, no worries.
I plan to have another birthday next year.

Hi Keith,
What did it cost for the Tilt Tray job?

A Similar TT job on our Sprinter from memory KTA $800. RAA $225 and Us $88

We have stayed at a Sport Ground/Club at the port for around $6 a night but for only 1 night ( fully self contained)

"tanks" here--
Still waiting for the account--RACWA won't cover the tow. I had no choice on which c/park to go to. Where I am permit dogs, and this is where the tow-truck driver suggested.

I know that feeling all to well Keith, had the same thing happen twice with the kombi, blow a tyre, not far down the road and the spare tyre blows. I'm guessing it wasn't new tyre as the spare but rather a well worn one and I think that maybe where the problem lies, the tyre rotated in one direction most of it's life and then ends up spinning the opposite way after a period of case oxidization..... almost the text book requirements for a tyre failure. Sometimes I wonder about the value of carrying a spare tyre as they so often fail just after fitting it.
A person may fail many times, they only become a failure when they blame someone else John Burrows

"tanks" here---Dot, both tyres were just shreads and a maze of steel wires. There was very little use in squirting the "stuff" into either tyre.
As far as "Russell" goes, we won't be in this place long enough for him to make friends other than a passing hello.

Keith.

Hi Keith,
A bit late but maybe worth investing in a Tyre Pressure monitoring system (TPMS) We move ours between the Sprinter and the Cruiser/Caravan or Cruiser/boat Trailer depending on which combo we are using at the time. Over the years have saved a number of cruiser and caravan tyres.

Its more than saved the cost of the unit, but to me its more than that, it save the inconvenience and waiting around.

Re RAWA not covering the tow, I knew prior to the TT Job how much KTI and the RAA would pay, If you are with Ken Tame Insurance to me, they pay up to $1,000 a year for Breakdowns but not all for the one tow.

Sounds like a weight problem to me?
If the tyres are getting hot traveling on hot summer roads you might need to camp up through the day & travel at night.
When I started trucking I only had 'rag' tyres rather than steel belted radial ply tyres and I found I just couldn't travel at night going to Perth or Brisbane.
Tanks you might need to investigate having them blown up with nitrogen?
Be interesting to have the rear axle weighed?
