Change Fuel Filter 12HT Toyota Coaster

Post by greypowerpa »

Does the filter need to be bled after changing the filter? If so, how does one do this in such a restricted engine bay area? My 12HT is fitted to a 1989 bus and not sure how to get at any pump below filter to carry out a bleed. What is the best way to go about this, I think it`s time. Would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.....James

Most Japanese lift pumps have a little plunger on them to prime everything up.

It will look like this;

Keep pumping until it goes hard.

Hi James,
From memory the pump is about 40cm (2ft) lower than the filter and around 18cm to the rear, the top of the pump looks like Jon's example. I think its best to fill the filter with diesel then use the hand pump to get air out of the system.

I suggest if the Coaster is a long term buy I would purchase a Toyota workshop manual on the 12ht or a Gregorys manual

And have a look at the last picture; see the little gauze filter inside the banjo joint.

It's a trap for the unwary who don't keep it clean.... and they end up have a fuel problem.

I've got 2 12ht engines, they are one of the best diesel engines ever built. When you put your new filter on, fill it half way before spinning it on, this make bleeding much easier. To the rear of the injection pump, you will see a round thing just below the back of the pump. Unscrew that and it will pop up. This is the primer pump and you open the bleed screw on the top of the filter casing and push the pump up and down until fuel flows from the bleeder, shut the bleeder, hold the pump down and re-screw it down. It should start easily and may hunt a bit as it overcomes the small amount of air in the lines.

I run my 12ht's on veggie oil and have a $20 push pump just after the tank, it also has 12mm fuel lines and an in line throw away filter before the iP. When I need to bleed it, which is only when changing the main filter, just switch on the push pump and it flows through,. Done that with my earth mover which goes through filters with all the dust and grime, just take out the filter, switch on the push pump and it bleeds itself.
