side camera mounting

Post by bagmaker »

Hi experts,
anyone got relevant theory on the best height to mount side camera's? Not a lot of info out there, most seem to be mounted on or near the mirrors. I have the option of "quite high up" and are wanting to run the wires prior to install.

Mine are mounted low down on the sides of the 5'er, giving me great viewing.

Ads I've seen have them (on motorhomes) mounted just above the front wheel-arches, so's you can see cars overtaking on both sides.
Not sure what you'd do with a fiver...
a - mount them over the fiver's wheel-arches & run a cable across the hitch, bound to your lights/indicator cable??
b - mount them above the rear wheel-arches of the tug to keep an eye on where the fiver is swinging?
Either way, I reckon the height should be about car-driver's eye level so you can spot approaching vehicles.
I'd think that high mounting would tend to give you a distorted view of where the vehicles are positioned relative to your fiver. Our rear-view camera does. Been caught a few times changing lanes with cars closer than I thought.
Regards & God bless,

On the 5'er for sure, enables you to see the blind side when backing.

Wide angle Camera or narrow?

Wide would be low, narrow would be high, I think......

Most of the units Ive seen on the net are 170 degree so wide, wide.
I have internal conflict on the thinking, might have to get one and play with it :(

I have fabricated some aluminium pieces that help lift wayward branches up over the front and they then run along a piece of alum angle there for that purpose.
My side cameras, rear facing are housed high up behind these parts, allows a high view, further out than low does. I never look at these as my others are more important, so they are just recorded, if anyone does anything silly coming from the rear "I have you on tape"\
2 others facing forward cover forward/side intrusions and a couple on the trailer tell me what the idiot behind is doing, one is on it's own screen, as soon as I can see them in this one, I know I can pull back in after overtaking.
I have 2 more looking at the rear of VP, in case of anything going amiss, one is directed at the tow ball, allows me to back onto the trailer without help.
2 more in the engine bay looking for smoke or fire complete the 8.

I probably have some interesting footage on my front cams, maybe even the rear ones.
We have just been up to Kingaroy for the weekend as I have made a lot of changes and wanted to see how they all worked (some didn't)
Coming back there is a 3 kilo steep bit of road, everyone including the 2 semis up my clacker goes down quite slow, get to the bottom and its a race back up to 100 kph.
Round the first corner and less than 100 metres away 2 semis, side by side, wrong place to overtake idiot ! Was a lot of blue smoke when I put it back into gear and pulled away. Have a mechanical inspection on Friday, I have no fear of their brake roller test !
Ya just never know what is round the next corner in life (or driving)

Wayne,

there are 180*, 170*, 120* and even 60* ish.

The 60*'s are pretty expensive. 60*'s are good for long distance views.

I managed to blow up my 60's and won't be buying them again. I have a 120* looking down from the roof on the back. It doesn't cover the width so will go to 180*.

Double decker and feeling inadequate...., you've got to see a therapist.
