Quantum Batteries ?

Post by Lance »

Only small scale as yet but who knows where it could lead.....

Are you sick of waiting an hour or two for your phone to charge? Don't want to leave it on charge overnight? Well, an Adelaide scientist is researching new technology which could change the shape of the energy industry worldwide.
Dr James Quach from the University of Adelaide has planned to use his experience with quantum mechanics to build the world's first quantum battery— a super battery with the potential for instantaneous charging.

I think it's called an ultra capacitor, been talked bout or yrs but not really achieved yet. The down sides have been the losses between charges and the lack of capacity to size ratio not being even close to the size of LTO batteries that are already out there in the market place. There was the idea of an ultra capacitor combined with an LTO cell and electronics between the two to allow for the much higher voltage charge into the capacitor (buck stage) to slowly top up the LTO cell until the voltages were equal, then a boost stage to take over until the capacitor was drained, then a short recharge cycle and away it all goes again. Still the same problem, where do you fit all this extra electronics into an already crowded area and also filtering out the "noise" such a circuit would produce through the other circuitry.
The manufacturers don't use LTO technology now for such devices because of both cost and the fact the battery in a child's device could still be functioning as designed when they enter their nursing home. The batteries they use now will outlast the technology life of the phone as it is, so why add price for a technology that isn't required or would be detrimental to future sales.
Induction charging is already here so plugging the phone into a charger cable is now last yrs technology, simply put the phone on the interactive pad and it connects to all the required interfaces and a charger.
Maybe the "quantum Battery" could be in the form of a card the phone sits next to in you pocket or phone holder so it can charge via the induction method while the interface between phone and the outside world is in the card and powered by the quantum battery, thus extending battery charge life. The issue will be getting people to remember to recharge the card, even if it does only take a few secs or mins ... maybe they could include a Peltier effect module to convert body heat to electricity to recharge the card, or a mechanical device activated by body movement that swings past a few magnets and charges the cards capacitor ... who knows, will the implant powered directly by the bodies own electrical circuit become a reality and battery technology will be redundant for such devices.
