Most were of foreign origin, translating their names from their native language into English: "Rising Star" is one Asian girl who springs to mind... the kids called her 'Star'.
However, I'm sure some parents had a twisted sense of humour...
"Stan Mullet" was called "Stun" by the other kids.
One girl's surname was Cotten. Her given names were Polly Esther.

Despite this (perhaps because of it) she was very well adjusted, and had a great sense of humour.
Then there was the girl whose name was pronounced "Ke-ROS-inay". Her parents had seen the name on a country store window.
It was spelled


The kids called her 'Ros'.
