Dottie,
When we moved into our house, all downlighting was QH. Not only do they produce light, but lots of heat. Our ceiling insulation is shredded paper treated with fire retardant.
We decided to replace the downlights with LEDs.
The week after the installation was done, the gummint announced a subsidy on LED replacements. 🙄 Don’t know if it’s still available...
Our privately funded job cost about $1200 for (if memory serves) 29 lights.
Power bill immediately dropped by 35%!
Job paid for itself in less than 8 months. 😁
Downside: the installer found one of the light cradles had moved in the ceiling, and the cover which is meant to keep it separated from the insulation wasn’t. Had we left that particular light on for more than about an hour, we ran significant risk of a ceiling fire! 😳 The fire retardant gradually loses effect. Should be replaced every 10 years... our house is 25YO. 😥
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Don't have led down lights, but all my house lighting is 240v led and it's not expensive, cost per globe is $3.95 on ebay. Buy my B22 led globes in bulk, use 15w for areas you need lots of light and 10w in other areas. Also use a a variety of soft white, bright white and lovely warm light. Have only every changed a couple of globes, that was because there was a short in a lamp stand that tended to blow them out, the rest just keep on going.

Others have said their power bills dropped a lot when they changed to led globes, don't have the problem of power bills luckily.

Edited this post, just realised my led globe costs aren't $8, but $3.95 when I buy 10.

"tanks" here Dot---
Are you lining up a job for George to change existing bulbs or are you starting from new ?.

DO NOT even consider the Quartz Halogen type fitting as the globes generate so much heat that there is a risk of fire. If you have these in existing fittings get rid of them.

I had Q.H. globes in the bed/reading lights of the Sprinter and severely scorched the rubber back curtain from the heat.
Like Native Pepper, I have 240v Mirabella mini-spiral globes 15w, and slim line 18w, cool white and warm white in different areas.

Hope this helps.
Keith.

I plan to have another birthday next year.

https://www.dx.com/p/gu10-6w-300lm-6500 ... E-xnk1lLYU They plug straight into the same 240vac fitting as a halogen globe and you can buy these connector from Bunnings. Now you just need to find downlight holders you like that have the halogen globes in them, put the halogen globe away in the cupboard for when you need a heater lamp or a load to cell balance your lithium battery ( ;) ) and replace it with the LED from DX, and job done. After 6 yrs use back in Lake Illawarra, we didn't have any of these 3 x 1w LED globes fail, yet the halogens lasted maybe 6 weeks at best. They are brighter than the halogen globes if you buy the cool white, but the warm white have the yellow look of the halogen globes if you prefer that.

Is that the difference? I've often wondered when I've seen them in the shops. Learn something new every day.
