swagman brakes

Post by dapope »

Thought it might be better to continue here... admin feel free to move other posts as felt needed
Went for a grovel underneath and took a pic. Derek says he has exhaust brake but is non functional, he told me the price of fixing it....needs a lot of grease to make it comfortable
Anyway, pics under ours looks like the turbo drives off the exhaust, but not sure about the other part. I have no on off switches for an exhaust brake

Need photos of the exhaust after the turbo but before the first muffler, that is where the exhaust brake will be located.

Terry I haven't had a lot to do with later turbo high performance diesels so you might help me a little.
In that picture I can see an air or vacuum operated device which I think is the "waste gate" ??
wgate.jpg
Can you briefly explain what it does?

EDIT: I looked up a few sites that do explain it for me.

The exhaust brake would normally be located just before the muffler or immediately after the turbo, there is a wrap-around stainless clamp after the turbo so my guess is that is were it should have been.
Tthe previous owner of Brian's Hino had broken the ears off the exhaust brake house so he removed the exhaust brake and just bolted the pipes together. Coming back from Orange Brian near had a Derek run away, and he didn't have the weight of the workshop (trailer with everything in it) pushing from behind at that stage so braking was a real concern. I welded up the housing, drilled and tapped it and then refitted the thing with a new gaskets etc, huge difference, virtually no braking required when pulling up for the lights etc till the last 20 km/h, held fine down long hills with no brake application required. I would be quite concerned driving a rig that size without on exhaust brake or Jake brake fitted and working, even the 3500 Mazda get’s a bit smelly down Macquarie Pass if the exhaust brake decides to take some time off.

The Actuator circled in Bruce's photo is to control the waste gate, the reason for using a wastegate instead of fuel limiting to control boost is to lower max possible cyl pressure so less NOX is produced on full load.
Before polution regulation were tightened the turbo pumped in as much air as it could, the fuel was restricted to control the amount of horsepower the engine produced so as the fuel was all burnt but a heap of oxygen remained a lean burn occured creating very high peak cyl temps, that's when max NOX is produced so in reality the wastegate is a pollution control device, limiting max boost pressure.

zilch on jake brakes on Ebay, will play on some hills when(if ) we get going. The spring and other bits were left behind in adelaide last night by the freight company. I overheard the gentleman doing the work being somewhat cross at them. He will now have 2 days to fit 4 days of work in, and he was understandbly cross. My better half was a lot upset, has turned her phone off cause her work keeps ringing her asking when she is back. They seem to forget she works casually
tomorrow will be a better day:)

I guess it's all a bit of perspective. The Kombi is about as small as you are going to get besides sleeping in the car but to me it feel far more roomy than the Mazda 3500. I can stand up in the kombi and put a jumper on when the poptop is up, I can lie full length on the bed, in the Mazda my head is against the roof lining even slumped down so to stand up straight I have to stand in the stairwell

You won't find a "Jake Brake" to suit your rig, it's an internal engine thing used by GM and Cummins and maybe Mack sill use it I think (they had snapping cam issues and a few other problems), you are looking for an exhaust brake, either a Smiths gate type or a generic butterfly valve type. Used on lots of small to medium trucks so it should be easy enough to find, fitting can be a bit tricky but there are short cuts including a manually operated system using the head light flasher function in the in column combo switch.
Have I completely bamboozled you yet

nah, I can take it!!!
Will look for a generic unit...
theres also some sort of unit that is fitted to the auto as an option.
My trouble is working out whats fitted, I have to find the numbers on the engine itself to work out the codings....and at the moment I cannot be Ar@#$%d/ motivated
