We're both not getting any younger, so to have a "meet and have a yackety yack " isn't always easily done.

Crossing Aus has no problems for me as I've done it so many times since the 60's and I actually enjoy the drive.
Actually it's not being "let out of the state" but being let into other States, a WA plate does / will raise a few eyebrows, and there are more ways over than the Eyre Highway, so getting across would not be a worry.
But I'm content to wait
