T1 control box and solar panels

Post by Hoffysplace »

Hi
This is more directed at T1.
I have your control box and 4 x 130w panels and 2 x 160w panels.

I want to remove the 130w panels and replace them with 2 x lg neon 2 360 w panels.
Can that be done or do I need to change to a bigger dingo. I want to put a vent in the bathroom but at the moment I don’t have the roof space

Hoffy,
A 12-gauge through the roof should make it easier...
No need to shift your solars ...
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Where is Terry? bet he isn't up on a roof these days, did he go ? did he get there? any breakdowns? Is he alone?

Why do you need to know if T1 is alone 😱

Bugga, knew I should have connected to the forum when my phone recovered after dropping it's bundle.

Wed and Thurs at the Gawler job, finish for now but when he fits up the solar I'll have go back and sort that part out .... should I send you a PM when I'm heading over there Dottie ;)

OK, back to the question.
I have your control box and 4 x 130w panels and 2 x 160w panels.

The system you have now is a PWM controlled system and relies on the panels being within the voltage range of the battery.
The LG 360w panels are house designed panels with an open circuit voltage of 41.6v where the panels you have now have an open circuit voltage of around 21v ... so to stat with, if they were connected together into one controller, the 41.6v would over come the 21v and force current back into those panels and turn them into heaters and destroy them. You could fit blocking diodes to protect the lower voltage panel from the high voltage panels, but basically only the high voltage panels will get through to the controller.
Next issue, the system you have (as far as I remember it and no guarantee it's correct) is the Dingo 20/20 drives a 100 amp solid state relay .... if I've got that part right, that solid state relay can only handle a maximum of 30vdc, so the 41.6v would destroy the solid state relay ...
Next issue, the 360w panels have a maxinum output of 10.28 amps all the way up to 35v (at 25*C, that 35v reduces big time when the panels are in summer sun) So each of those panels would only put out 133w at their best, the rest just gets wasted as heat in the panel .....

What you want to do can be done, but the 3 x 360w panels will need a Victron 100/50 MPPT Smart controller and you will need to use a Victron 712 BMV that has the Bluetooth capability so a network can be set up between the Smart Controller and the BMV. This way the BMV dictates the battery voltage so the effect of having another charging source (the T1 Dingo/solid state relay and the remaining panels) doesn't cause the MPPT part to shut the controller down because I believes the battery is fully charged.
It will also need a control between the MPPT Victron controller and the T1 control system so it can turn the controller off if a cell in the battery goes over 3.6v ......

Simply as eh  it can be done, but it's not as simply as connecting a few solar panel cables to the existing system ........

If you are happy with the solar input you are getting now with the panels you have, you could just raise the panels that are in the way by using 75 x 25 x 1.6 aluminium angle to give you clearance for a vent. If it is going to be one of those opening flap types with a built in fan, the flap will still open part way and the fan will push the steam out .... and you don't have to worry about the vent being open when it's raining, the solar panel over the top of it acts like vent cover stopping the rain getting in through the vent .....

A bit simpler than the first idea, but relies on you being happy with the solar input you are getting now .....

The LG panels are house panels and have a higher voltage and Maximum power points.

The DIngo (any size) is a PWM controller and they do not work effectively with house panels and their higher voltages..

You need to get a high quality MPPT controller.

If fitting just two high power good quality house panels; I would be installing a Victron 100/50 bluetooth and wire the panels in series.

(How that interfaces with Terry's box, I do not know.)
