What did you do to your rig today?

Not EVEN a purtee face.
Had the strap thingy, lost the contents once because I forgot it. Fridge / freezer pigeon pair is upstairs so by the time I pulled up, well, not pretty
Used a cyl only because I have a various heap of them lying about, the bracket is a quick lasercut and bash edges in vice for stiffness. The air tube to it is fancy fluoro-polymer for hi-temperature, also protected by some old fuel hose as it would be annoying if an air leak occured there.
Air system is pretty 1987 standard, now resplendent with half price chinese knock-off compressor- cycles between 85-120 psi so I don't think 60 would quite cut it for full throttle, its an interesting way to push a lever that is for sure. I have seen that style of throttle on boats before but didn't know about use on a vehicle. Seems to work pretty well but is definately sluggish the first time you push it, sounds like it has to bleed through or balance the pressure in the foot pedal.

which begs me the question -being a newb to old diesels- how did they start these things in the cold? Am I missing a heater terminal or something??

Old diesels were started in a number of ways depending on engine size. Big engines had a small engine which turned over the big engine until it got enough compression heat to fire it, Smaller engines had a wick start, you lit the wick and it put heated air into the engine and after a few turns, it fired hopefully.

Remember starting an old D8 in winter in the snowies, you had to get the starter engine going and some times it took a long time to get it to even turn over the D8, then you had to keep the valve lifers up and turn the big engine over fast enough so when you let the valve lifter go, it fired. Many times the small engine would stall and you'd have to start all over, when the D8 fired, it filled the surrounding air with a huge cloud of black the white smoke, glad things have changed and most engines just fire not matter the temp. Many time used to tow a big scraper until it fired up as the small engine just couldn't cope on below zero mornings.

My old 330 Bedford diesel would start on the first click.... even after sitting for 6 months. No glow, or heater.

The old KL Bulldog - blow torch under the fuel bowl then rock the fly wheel back and forth with the steering wheel until the engine fired. If it started backwards, stop it and start it again,

466 Bedford diesel just like Jon's 330. I guess made in England for cold conditions it'd have to be good in our country?
Little Perkins I've got now has a glow plug in the throat of the air intake.
Once it gets hot it opens a small valve to allow diesel to trickle on the glow & burst into flames. Then hit the starter & suck in the hot air & smoke combined with the fuel that is injected & instant starting. These can easily be fitted to any non turboed (?) diesel.

I'm making (remaking) the over head cupboard doors . The first ones have warped . Luckily I found some already made in a second hand shop in Bundy last Tuesday , one fit perfect one I had to shorten and one I had to lengthen (inch each end) , cost me 7 bucks each I couldn't buy the timber for that price .
Also redoing the entrance steps I have removed the rubber and found some rust that will be fixed , the "boss" wants the same vinyl as the rest of the bus floor .
