Jon, when G tried to switch the heater from gas to 240v he said the switch was mobile and didn't feel right so today he took the switch out and tested it to see if it turned on and off ok which it did so he then checked to see if there was power before the switch and yes there was so tomorrow he will replace the switch put it back together and retry. Q/ How long should the HW anodes last? he put a new one in not long before we left 3 mths ago and he said it looks like it has corroded to 1/2 its original diameter up the end nearest the thread...

Depends on the water Dot some is harder or more corrosive than others .

While there is material on the anode, its ok and doing it's job. Once there is no material, then it has to be replaced.

Just buy one and keep it as a spare. The first one will be ok for ever then.

It might pay to flush it out with some clean water???

Tell G that if it all gets eaten thru near the threaded end, it won't drop off. There is a steel core thru the centre.
I got one in the store somewhere. It's for the suburban, not Norman's one.
If he get's a new one it pays to unscrew the anode off the cap & Locktite (copyrite) it.

Also tell G not to use too much thread tape. The threaded section of the anode needs to contact the threaded section in the tank (metal to metal). If you isolate the anode by using too much thread tape the anode won't corode and that is not a good thing. If the anode is not coroding then the tank is and that is what you are trying to prevent.

Agree with all the comments so far. you need to hose the junk out of the tank while the anode is out, then hose off the anode itself but don't wire brush it or anything like that, just rinse it off. A bit of thread tape near the top of the thread will do the job but there is a Loctite product for sealing the thread which will do a far better job. There must be something on the thread or it will rust into the socket and you'll never get it out again.

Got G to read all of your suggestions and thoughts re the water heater thing he said thanks to you all. He replaced the switch, and flushed the tank out, (didn't have much in it at all) turned the power on waited a few minutes and it was heating up nicely so all happy now :) next :)
