Australian Trivia Only

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Jon,
Every newsroom would typically have at least two subeditors working between the jounalists and the editor.
I have worked in newsrooms where I was the only sub for six journos, and where I was one of eight subs vetting the work of 30+ journos.
No matter the size of the staff, there is always only one editor. He's the manager equivalent, reporting to the CEO of the organisation.
The sub's job is to make sure the journo's writing (a) makes sense to a new reader (if it's an ongoing situation), (b) explains the situation clearly and (c) does not contain errors of grammar or spelling.
The fact-checking is the editor's job, along with making sure all the legal niceties are observed ("alleged offender" etc) and the organisation is not laying itself open to legal action.
The subs and editors might know their competitors in a small market, but socialising with the 'enemy' is usually frowned upon… unless both media are owned by the one organisation, a common thing in country towns where the TV and radio stations are one company.
In this case, sometimes they share the one newsroom & staff.

ps. Those lyrics sound familiar… ;)

Now, back to my question: anyone found the link? :P
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Maybe he financed & produced Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone? Could that be their connection?
Shirley,
You've gone down the wrong rabbit-hole on both. :D
Keep digging.

Still no suggestions?

Clue #3: Don’t believe the Wikipedia entry on the ‘history’ page of the Miss Australia Quest site.
You’ll find better information elsewhere.
Look for an old publication famous for a Stan Cross cartoon featuring two building construction workers in danger. Part of the caption featured the words, “For gorsake, stop laughing…”
Henry Lawson was among many famous names who also wrote for this publication.
Look at the company’s history.

I’m practically spoon-feeding you with this clue!

Stan Cross worked for Smith's Weekly, the magazine sponsored the Miss Australia quest in 1926-1927, the quoted cartoon became famous as one of the best ever but I can't find any connection?
Clyde Packer, Kerry Packer's g'father was one of the founders of Smith's Week.

Did James Packer get caught with his pants down?

Shirley,
You've got it!

The connection between the Grey Lady and James Packer is as follows:
1. The Grey Lady in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was played by Nina Young.
2. Nina’s mother is Tanya Young (nee Verstak).
3. Tanya Verstak won Miss Australia in 1961.
4. The ongoing Miss Australia Quest was a circulation-boosting stunt initiated and sponsored in 1926 by the Daily Guardian, a sensationalist tabloid offshoot of Smith’s Weekly. (A fact the Miss Australia organisation would prefer to forget — they attribute it to the Lone Hand, a literary monthly, but that was a one-off in 1908.) BTW, the Daily Guardian effort was also the start of the Page Three Girl, featuring candidates for the MAQ… a shade more demurely dressed in 1926 than in recent years!
5. Smith’s Weekly — and the Daily Guardian — were established by Sir Joynton Smith (BTW, born James Smith, son of a London east-end gasfitter), Claude McKay, and one Robert Clyde “R.C.” Packer.
6. R.C. Packer begat Frank who begat Kerry, who begat James.
SIMPLE, INNIT?
:D

So Shirley gets the cigar (or GF cake) for this one.

Your turn, Shirley. :P

Ok, easy one, there is a legendary ghost story that has captured the imagination of generations, he appeared & alerted a man as to where his body could be found, he came to Australia as a convict, who was he? Who murdered him? & where did his ghost appear?
