How important/famous does someone have to be before they are considered “assassinated” rather than just common or garden “murdered”?

I have always thought that somebody had to be in public office to be assassinated. So it will probably never happen to any of us plebs that read these pages.

I would think you would be classed as being assassinated if a high up Gov official / Head of a country, , Murdered if killed by someone you knew or a robbery, gang stuff. What would war deaths be ? ? civilians murdered and soldiers ? self defense?
