Thought for Today

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Even advertisers make mistakes:

Read the bold text at the bottom. 🙄

And I think I’ve posted this one before…

Not sure if the signwriter is plain ignorant 🙄
or having a lend of the tradie after being “corrected” for not using an apostrophe somewhere it wasn’t necessary. 😏

Never let a good apostrophe go to waste.
Otherwise it could be a catastrophe.

My eyes were so drawn to the apostrophe in “your’s” that I missed the gaffe in the next line: “no #1”.
The hash (#) is an alternative to the use of the Latin abbreviation “No” (from ‘Numero’) which BTW is capitalised, even mid-sentence, to disinguish it from the negative (and NOT with a full stop).
So in this instance one or the other is redundant.
It should be either “No 1” OR “#1”.

Often wondered about that,
to disinguish it from the negative
so is distinguish the positive or the negative?

T1,
That should be obvious: NO is negative!
😏😵‍💫😁

And No is derived from Latin (Numero) not Greek.
The Greek “Nu” is the 13th letter in their alphabet, as pronounced. Written as “N” in upper case and “v” in lower case, just to keep you on your toes.
That’s why we abbreviated the English word “number” to “No” and not “Nu” which would appear to be more logical in English practice.
If we were to use the Greek root word for “number” (which I can’t print in the Greek alphabet) it translates to “arithmos”… which the English language stole to use as “arithmetic”, meaning we had to find another language to steal from to delineate single digits.
See? Simple ain’t it? 🤔

“The English language doesn’t steal from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, mugs them and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.”

Here endeth yet another lesson.
I’ll edjacate youse lot evenchally! 😵‍💫🤣

T1,
Are you conflating ‘distinguish’ and the ‘duck’ series?
If yes, then ‘distinguish’ and ‘extinguish’ are both negative forms of ‘tinguish’ which is the sensation you get on your tongue from fizzy lollies.

A number puzzle — or logic puzzle, if you prefer — which I have stolen from another forum:
(See? I’m at least honest about this.)

My father was 31 when I was 8 years old.
Now he’s twice as old as me.
How old am I now?

First correct answer will win a BIG smile from me.
(Treasure of a lifetime! 😏)
