There's always audio books, you get to listen to them rather than having to read them
Not everyone is a good reader, my best mate and best man at my wedding is dyslexic, a brilliant plant mechanic, but he can't read for sh*tte. He gets paid mega $$ working in the Qld mines and I got him onto audio books, he listens to them travelling to and from work and at night to relax him before he goes to sleep ..... He says it's the best thing ever, conversations no longer go over his head because he now understands a lot of what is being talked about and can join in rather than being on the outside .... it has even helped him follow what the service sheets are telling him rather than watching what others do and then doing the same thing but quicker.

He has reached the stage of following along in the book as he is listening, so the words and letters have a better meaning .... I guess we all did that with our kids when we were teaching them to read and they'd get good enough to know when you were cheating reading their favourite bedtime story  The two different colour lenses in the glasses are said to be really good for those with dyslexia .....

Hi Dot, we're still here mate xxxx

Ray, you opened up a can of worms there mate. Yes, I average reading 3 books per week. That is real books, no wifi or fancy phone needed and bookmarked with a gorgeous dragon bookmark. We listen to audio books when travelling by car, and get the cd versions for when reception is poor. Yes, the patrol has a cd player in the dash.

Adelaide, we have learnt, has a lot of streets that look very similar. We must have driven around the same huge block a few times until we got our bearings. Once we found where the botanic gardens conservatory is and could suss out the parking for tomorrow, we are happy enough. The night time events, are still worrying us. They will only allow access by the main gates, which are directly opposite where the event is. Seems like a lot of walking will be needed, but we will know more tomorrow. Hoping to find a secret entry for cripples like me.

We found parking in the busy roads was not looking great, until we discovered a small shopping mall, hidden away . That was great, and it had outdoor parking. great until we realised that only the first 2 hours are free. Fast lunch and instant shop and out of there in under two hours.

The villa we are staying in had mugs that hold enough for a sparrow sized drink, so the search was on for some decent mugs. Coles had nothing. We were excited to find three op shops within the same block so felt we were in with a chance. Found one in the first shop then the next appeared in the third shop. Both mugs appeared to be brand new, but still got my boiling water treatment a few times before I would use them. Don't people here use decent sized mugs? Or do they hold onto them, when they do find one that holds at least a cupful of drink?

My son was dyslexic and we were able to get him special glasses with blue lens through a group in SA called SPELD. It is not just blue, they try many colours and hues till they find the right one. Advanced his reading about 4 years, but the teacher refused to let him use them as they were blue. A very angry dad just happened to walk into the class room a few days later to check. I had a friend in the catholic school and did our research first. Walked in, he was not wearing his glasses. I was told to leave. I told the teacher if my son could not wear his glasses then No one should be able to wear glasses, including the teacher.🤣 After a discussions I told the lad to grab his things as he was no longer going to THAT school. Went and collected his twin sister from another class and informed her teacher she too was no longer a student there. Hour later they enrolled in the local catholic school and he advanced instantly as he could now read using his glasses. He also had ceribal palsy that did not help. They then found the daughter had a learning difficulty that they were able to correct. Cost a lot less per year for son to attend that school and zero for daughter as they were twins and enrolled together😇

Thanks Ray. I never let him forget as we were trainers at the local footy club. Often used to bring up how well the Don was going and how progressive and thoughtfull teaches could help. Just need the right skills. Was not the last tall poppy I cut down. Case of always beware of the quiet person, as often they attack when not expected.

Hey Dot, hope you are both going ok mate ???xxxx

Yes Ray, that's what we were after. Mugs done.

Brian, I believe that was only a fault of a stupid teacher. I taught in the public sector and actually sponsored one of my grade 5 students for a programme that was researching Irlen lenses, that was back in the nineties. His lenses were yellow and boy what a difference they made. Now they are common and should be accepted by any teacher, regardless of the sector.
Today we visited the conservatory in the gardens. It was an amazing trip and the glass spectacular. What we didn't know, is that there is another 15 humungous works scattered around the gardens. It's over a two kilometre walk, outside in the summer heat. We will hire me a wheel chair to go see this on another day soon.

stay cool you lot,

Hi Deb my episode was early 80's and yes it was a dumb / stupid teacher but he was deputy headmaster, so just better to get them out. My sons glasses were a dark blue and looked like sunglasses, part of the problem :ugeek: with the glasses on he jumped about 4 years and was on pare with the rest of his class. Take them off and he went straight back. Had the same problem with maths as the teacher insisted he sit out side as he asked too many question to try and learn. Teacher response was he was too dumb. I taught him basic maths over a couple of nights and then he challenged the teacher on basics such as 1/2 1/4 and simple multiplication etc. He got them all right and apparently quicker than the teacher. Trouble was when he was asked to do it on paper he used my outdated methods so failed as the teacher could not follow it. Had the same problem when I was doing a computer course on spreadsheets as the teacher could not find my macros. When I displayed them he could not read them as I just used the letters where he needed the letter in one cell and a explanation in cell alongside it. I told him the test was to create a sheet for a business and the macros were hidden to stop uneducated people from mucking around, and if he could not read my macros then he should not be playing around.

Hi. Still a lot of smoke around up here. Warm today but OK. Tomorrow is back to 41deg. Having airbags fitted to the MH tomorrow as it was a bit saggy in the back end. Put it off for a long time but it was starting to damage the inner wheel arch. Goodnight All.
