Fire at home yesterday

We have a double garage and a single adjoining one separated from the double by a brick wall.

Yesterday at 7am I was opening the door to the single to get my car out when I heard my compressor start up in the double. Strange I thought, better have a look. On opening the door to the double I was confronted with a garage full of smoke and on looking around saw flame emanating from a power point reaching the ceiling.

Luckily I was carrying a jumper, a good one, with which I was able to smother the flames however, my good jumper is now ruined but at least I saved the garage and house.

Although the compressor was plugged in to the powerpoint, it was not switched on and I can only surmise that the fire caused a short between active and neutral resulting in the compressor starting up, luckily, otherwise I would not have noticed until the garage roof was well alight.

That was the only other thing connected to the PP that caught alight, the mains fridge in the bus that was connected directly to the PP. I can only think that the plug was not fully pushed in and the less than positive connection caused it to overheat. A bit hard to tell now as the plug is a molten mess along with the PP.

Probably a high resistance connection in the switch;

and the load of the compressor motor was enough to generate the heat to start the fire.

but not enough of a short to start the compressor until it shorted over...... says a lot for just not turning off, but pulling the plug from the wall.

George, Do you have RCD's fitted on the circuits in your house and garage?

Yes, I do David and they didn't trip. All is fixed now and electrician can't explain it.
