no, quite right, I seldom do

I am talking about if we were to get a tankful of dodgy water and wanted to treat the water to make it potable.
what would folks treat it with and at what ratio

I think most people use chlorine ?
I've never had bad water and I don't empty my tank at home..I do filter in and I have two filters after the tank.

When in WA outback (mostly bore water) I use miltons sterilising solution or a product from bio magic called "water pure". Water pure uses peroxide and silver as the active ingredient. Our water is filtered at the tap and also at filling.
