Instrument repairs

Post by supersparky »

The odometer and trip meter in the Coaster have stopped clocking up the klm's and I want to get it repaired. Does anyone know what the old instrument repairers are called now. Or for that matter does anyone fix things anymore. Should I just go to the wreckers and get another speedo? Everything else works fine , it just won't clock k's
Cheers

The only tradesman instrument repairer I know of that's still in business - Humphrey Instruments Sales & Service. 2/235 Princes Hwy, Unanderra NSW 2526 (02) 4272-6014 at least I hope he's still in business.

It's sad isn't it. Just another specialised trade that seems to have withered away. I was sort of hoping that someone would pop up with....Blah blah.... they call themselves 'xxxx' now. Maybe they are all retired and driving round Australia in motorhomes or something. We have half a dozen instrument tech's at work but none of 'em could fix anything mechanical. Looks like I'm off to the wreckers.

David I'm assuming you've checked the cable?
There's a couple of fully qualified speedo 'adjusters' in Adelaide that recently got caught turning back some clocks............

Hi David
I assume you are referring to the mechanical geared type
I expect the problem would be parts
Possibly just one stripped gear in the train ;)
But where would the repairer get that gear [from the wreckers??] :)

The cable is OK, the speedo itself works fine, it's just the odometer and tripmeter that don't work now. There's plenty of those suitably qualified shonks on the Gold Coast as well, but I wouldn't let any of them within cooee. I use the GPS now for odometer but I also use it at work so I have to keep writing all this stuff down and then do the maths. The lazy bugger in me says 'get it fixed' so that can be my new years present to myself.

At least ring Humphreys, explain the problem and they make have the repair parts in stock, or at least be able to give you the genuine number so you can get it from the dealer

Hi
That looks like it is one of the geared digits ,probably the decimal digit or the drive after the speedo ,into the digit train

Have pulled a couple apart in the distant past :(
IF it was a digit gear with teeth chewed just relocated it to the highest mileage end
if it is the drive & not the digit, then the wreckers would be the next step
for personal use only ,on old ,not for sale vehicles
.

Have you given a thought for a GPS speedo to replace the old one. Might be cheaper than a repair. They are available in the US, http://www.speedhut.com/gauges/GPS-speedometers

Dirk

did that fix it
